Jun 9, 2018 | 4:08 PM

A provincial grant program aimed at strengthening opportunities for student success has led to the hiring of a new First Nations Metis and Inuit Learning Supports Coach for the Wolf Creek Public School District.

Ms. Josephine Small will begin her new role on August 30, with her appointment coming on the heels of approved funding under the Innovation in First Nations Education (IFNE) Grant Program.

Small holds a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education Degree with intensive study of Cree and structure of languages. In addition, Small is said to have extensive knowledge of the history and culture of the Maskwacis people as well as the Cree language and culture.

“I am blessed that I have been able to make a career of teaching my language and culture,” says the First Nations Cree member of the Ermineskin Reserve in a press release. “I took it as an opportunity to utilize my skills and reach First Nations students not attending reservation schools. Cree is my first language and will be a strong asset to this role as a learning supports coach working with FNMI students and Elders respectfully in our mother tongue.”
