A Penhold man is facing charges following his arrest in Canmore over the weekend after fuel was stolen from parked vehicles.

Banff RCMP say they were investigating a series of thefts of gasoline and other property from rural communities between June 21 and 22.

These offences included the theft of metal gates and ski racks from the Sunshine Ski Village in Banff.

Mounties subsequently identified a suspect vehicle and trailer, and discovered it on June 23 in Canmore. The suspect was arrested and stolen property was recovered.

Brandon Wegner, 27, is charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, theft exceeding $5,000, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and failure to comply with an undertaking.

He appeared before a judge on June 23 and was released pending his next court date in Canmore on July 25.

“Communication between law enforcement agencies is a key to the Crime Reduction strategy within the Bow Valley,” says Staff Sergeant Michael Buxton-Carr, Banff Detachment Commander. “Timely intelligence-sharing allowed our patrol units to recover valuable property and to protect our rural communities against further harm.
