CF-18 flyby Saturday in Red Deer for WWII veteran

Jun 29, 2018 | 9:14 AM

WINNIPEG- Two Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) CF-18 Hornet fighter jets from 4 Wing Cold Lake will conduct a flyby over the Red Deer Sheraton Hotel for the celebration of life for Second World War veteran Lieutenant-General (Retired) Donald Laubman and his wife Margie Laubman.

The flyby will take place at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 30.

Officials say the aircraft will fly over the hotel at an altitude no lower than 500 feet above the highest obstacle on their route.

Flybys by RCAF aircraft are carefully planned and closely controlled for public safety, and are dependent upon weather and flying conditions.

Donald Currie “Don” Laubman served as a Spitfire fighter pilot during the Second World War. He was awarded Distinguished Flying Cross and Bar, and rose to the rank of lieutenant-general in peacetime.

The CF-18 Hornet is the RCAF’s frontline multi-role fighter, and is employed in many different roles, including air defence, air superiority and tactical support.

The RCAF says in a release it is “proud to honour the life and service of Second World War veteran Lt.-Gen. (Ret’d) Laubman.”
