Going blue: Iconic Drayton Valley sign being repainted

Jul 3, 2018 | 10:58 AM

The iconic red oil derricks entrance sign situated off of Highway 22 welcoming motorists to Drayton Valley is coming down for a makeover.

The three derricks will be removed on July 10 and will be painted blue as part of the town’s new brand that was put in place in the summer of 2016. It has been several years since the derricks had their last paint job after first being opened in 1994.

Parts of the Ring Road will be closed while crews work to bring the structures down and transported to a local facility. Town officials hope to have the derricks back up by August long weekend.

In addition to the derricks turning blue, the town plans to spruce up the landscaping around the site as well.
