TRUDEAU DECRIES POPULISM AFTER FORD MEETING

Hours after he met with a premier who campaigned on a populist platform, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told supporters at a rally in Brampton, Ont., that he wouldn’t let a worldwide trend of populism get in the way of his 2019 campaign. Earlier at the Ontario legislature, Trudeau and Ontario Premier Doug Ford clashed on issues including asylum seekers and carbon pricing. Trudeau said he outlined Canada’s refugee obligations to Ford and promised that a carbon price will be imposed on Ontario and residents will get the proceeds.

JUNE EMPLOYMENT DATA TO BE RELEASED

Statistics Canada will release the employment data for June this morning. In May, the economy unexpectedly lost jobs for a second month in a row in May. The federal agency said the economy lost 7,500 jobs in May as a drop in full-time employment was only partially offset by an increase in part-time jobs. The unemployment rate held steady at 5.8 per cent for the fourth consecutive month.

ONE DEAD IN B.C. SMALL PLANE CRASH

The pilot of a small plane was killed and his three passengers were able to walk away after a crash near the Sechelt airport in British Columbia on Thursday. Fire Chief Trevor Pike says the plane crashed in heavy brush and forest just minutes after leaving the airport. He says the three passengers were able to make their way to a local hospital before emergency crews arrived.

LAUNDRY MICROPLASTICS FROM VANCOUVER END UP IN OCEAN

Microplastics from Metro Vancouver’s laundered clothes are ending up in water treatment plants and filtering into the ocean, says a study published in the science journal Marine Pollution Bulletin. It found that Vancouver-area treatment plants remove about 1.8 trillion plastic particles in waste water each year, but 30 billion particles are still released into the ocean.

WORLD CUP BARS

Bars in Montreal’s Plateau neighbourhood will open early this morning to let fans to watch France and Uruguay battle in a World Cup quarter-finals match in Russia. Montreal is home to about 57,000 people born in France. Today’s other quarter-final features Brazil against Belgium. The other two quarter-final matches go Saturday, with Sweden facing England followed by host Russia against Croatia.

N.B. TOWN RETAKES COVETED ‘LONGEST LOBSTER ROLL’ TITLE

Residents of Shediac, N.B. are celebrating a restored, distinctly Maritime honour — creating the longest lobster roll in the world. People turned out in droves Wednesday evening to watch as a chef and volunteers stuffed the succulent meat into a 68-metre long loaf of bread to beat Charlottetown, P.E.I.’s record-breaking length of more than 61 metres last year.
