Price structure for black and blue cart collection system finalized

Oct 29, 2018 | 10:56 PM

Final approval has been given to the pricing structure for new blue and black carts, which residents will get next spring.

Red Deer city council approved the rates at their meeting on Monday night.

Residents will be able to customize their personal blue and black cart collection system to meet their own household waste needs, according to a release from The City.

Currently, residents are charged a flat rate of $21.72, which covers garbage, green cart and blue box on a household’s utility bill.

This will increase to $22.25 next March due to inflation.

A household which chooses the small (120 L) black cart will see a $4 decrease on their monthly bill. Residents who select the large (360 L) cart will see an approximate $6 increase.

Those who opt for the standard size 240 L cart will remain at the newly inflated rate of $22.25.

The size of each household’s blue cart does not affect utility rates.

Residents will now receive a package in the mail from The City allowing them to select their preferred cart size. Those who don’t respond to The City will receive the standard 240 L carts by default.

The carts will go out in March 2019 with collection beginning in May.

Blue and black carts will be picked up every other week, alternating. Green carts will continue to be picked up weekly.

— Retail cannabis

Also on city council’s agenda Monday night were four site exceptions for retail cannabis.

The four proposed sites are at 5120 58 Street, Unit 3B 2250 50 Avenue, Unit 1 88 Howarth Street, and Unit 5 499 Timberlands Drive.

Council opted to table the matter until December 2019, 14 months after legalization.

A resolution was passed at a previous meeting when council dealt with retail cannabis regulations, which stipulated that administration bring a report back 14 months after legalization looking at how well or not current policy is working.

There are still zero retail cannabis stores open in Red Deer, though the AGLC says they have received more than 20 applications from businesspeople looking to open one in our city.
