UPDATED: Men charged after Rocky Mountie bear sprayed, assaulted during arrest

Two suspects were in the vehicle with both alleged to have resisted arrest, resulting in an altercation with officers.

During the fight, an officer was bear sprayed before both suspects took off, including one who drove away in the stolen vehicle.

On October 29, as the result of a targeted search, RCMP observed the same stolen vehicle on the Sunchild First Nation and noted a man exiting the vehicle.

A foot chase ensued, resulting in the man being arrested inside a residence.

The man is accused of resisting arrest and assaulting the arresting officer, in addition to providing a false name after his arrest.

Mounties say the suspect was lodged in cells at the Rocky Mountain House RCMP Detachment and at the time of his arrest, was also wanted on arrest warrants out of other jurisdictions.

Wickins-Pearse has been charged with four counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, theft under $5,000, 16 counts of breach of probation, five counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, three charges of possession of weapon for dangerous purpose, two charges of resist arrest, assaulting a peace officer, assaulting peace officer with weapon, assaulting peace officer causing bodily harm, administering noxious thing, unauthorized operation of a motor vehicle, break and enter with intent, possession of a controlled substance, identity fraud, five counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm in motor vehicle and possession of prohibited firearm with ammunition.

On November 2, RCMP identified the second male involved in the incident as 37-year-old Peter Gopher of no fixed address. Gopher is charged with resist police officer, possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of stolen property under $5,000 and possession of a controlled substance. He is also facing charges under the Traffic Safety Act and is to appear in court via CCTV on November 7.

Jay Penner of the Rocky Mountain House RCMP Detachment, in a press release. “The Rocky Mountain House RCMP Detachment will relentlessly continue to identify and pursue multi-jurisdictional repeat offenders and ensure they are brought to Justice.”
