New K-5 school in Blackfalds a growing priority for Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools

A new Kindergarten to Grade 5 school in Blackfalds is moving up the capital priorities list for Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools.

The project has moved from number five to number two on the list of priorities in the division’s updated Three Year Capital Plan.

The number one priority remains the same – a grade 6 – 9 school in Red Deer.

Ken Jaeger, Supervisor of Support Services for Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools says a new elementary school for Blackfalds will soon be needed as St. Gregory the Great was opened last year with significantly more students than initially anticipated.

“The growth continued again this year, the second year of operation of the school,” he explains. “Our concern is that the school is nearing capacity in its second year. There are no plans or additional space to add to the existing facility and so we need to make sure that we’re providing an opportunity to get an approval for a second school in Blackfalds to address the needs of that growing community.”

Jaeger says they will now be working with the Town of Blackfalds over the next year or so to identify a possible site for a new school in the community.

The district’s third priority is a new Kindergarten to Grade 5 school in Red Deer, while capital priority four is a new Kindergarten to Grade 5 French Immersion school in Red Deer.

In terms of current capital projects, the modernization of St. Patrick’s Community School in Red Deer is said to be running on time and under budget.

Jaeger says they’re using a delivery method called Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) for the school’s modernization.

“We used that same delivery method on St. Joseph’s High School and St. Gregory the Great in Blackfalds and it’s been very successful for us,” states Jaeger. “It provides a collaborative environment for the construction team and the design team and ourselves to work together and come up with solutions and unique opportunities to move the project ahead. We’re still in Phase 1, so there’s a long ways to go, we have three phases in the project.”

Jaeger says Phase 1 of the roughly $15 million project which is entirely funded by Alberta Education, includes construction of 14 new classrooms, while Phase 2 and 3 include the revitalization of existing spaces within the school.

“We’re still another year or so out from being totally complete but this is certainly a great start for us,” says Jaeger. “Right now we’re anticipating Phase 1 is going to be completed and ready sometime in March of next year and then move on to Phase 2 which will probably take us til sometime in the summer of 2019 and then we’re hoping that we would be totally finished by Christmas of 2019.”

District officials say the structural steel work at St. Pat’s has now been completed, with roofing now started on the building as well. Flooring was scheduled to be installed October 24.
