“We’re pretty excited about becoming a university because that means we can retain our student-athletes for four years,” she pointed out. “In the third and fourth year is when you’re flourishing, whether it’s on the field of competition or with athletics, academics and community outreach.”

Chaise Combs, President of RDC’s Students’ Association and board member with the Alumni Association, said the atmosphere at RDC is a welcoming one where students have close relationships with their instructors.

“That is a key to success in school and Red Deer College does that better than a lot of other institutions,” he said.

But will that change when Red Deer College becomes a university?

“That was one of my concerns about university status,” Combs admitted. “I know the Students’ Association is going to be working with the college to ensure the school maintains that atmosphere and is able to meet the needs of students in that way.”
