Fire damages Innisfail residence undergoing renovations

Nov 7, 2018 | 8:57 AM

A property undergoing renovations was damaged by fire early Tuesday morning in Innisfail.

Crews were called to the property on 50 Avenue at about 4 a.m.

Innisfail Fire Chief Gary Leith says crews arrived to a fully-involved garage fire that had spread to an adjacent single-family dwelling.

“There was significant fire load with construction material stored in the garage to the rear of the property, which contributed to the fire spreading to the actual residence and its roof.”

Leith says the home was unoccupied at the time.

Twelve firefighters worked for about four hours to get the fire under control. One firefighter suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. There is no dollar estimate on the amount of damage caused by the fire, but Leith says it wasn’t a total loss.

Several nearby residents have been displaced from their homes due to residual smoke damage.
