A national program aimed at helping people quit smoking and live a healthier lifestyle has returned to Red Deer.

The ‘Walk or Run to Quit’ program launched from Red Deer’s Running Run Thursday night and highlighted the story of Judi MacEachen, a 35-year smoker turned runner who wants others to know it’s possible to quit smoking and live healthier.

Officials say 90 per cent of last year’s participants in the 10-week program reduced their smoking by utilizing the learn to walk or run 5km clinics along with the smoking cessation expertise of the Canadian Cancer Society.

Officials add research has found becoming physically active increases a person’s chances of quitting since exercise helps curb cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
