Competitive Highland dancers named ASDC-Central Athletes of the Month
A pair of competitive Highland dancers from Red Deer have been named Alberta Sport Development Centre – Central, Athletes of the Month for December.
Brianna and Gwendolyn Kehler are 14-year-old twin sisters attending grade 9 at Hunting Hills High School in Red Deer and dance with the Red Deer School of Highland Dancing with teachers Jacquie Munawych and Kimberly Biggelaar.
This past summer, Brianna Kehler won first overall for her age group in the Highlands Dances at the ScotDance Canada Championship Series held in Calgary, the largest Highland dancing competition in the world. The dance is described as precise and sharp, with military roots and traditionally performed by male dancers.
Gwendolyn meanwhile won first overall for her age category in the National Dances. A dance described as more fluid and graceful and derived from Scottish and Celtic folk dances.
