Free film workshop puts spotlight on mental health stigmas

A unique and interactive workshop happening later this month at Red Deer College will shine a light on the stigmas that still surround mental illness.

Movies For Mental Health is being presented Jan. 22 by Art With Impact Canada as part of RDC’s Make Some Time initiative.

The two-hour workshop, which is taking place thanks to a grant from the Red Deer & District Community Foundation, runs from 5:30 to 7:30 in the Margaret Parsons Theatre. It will feature dinner for attendees, a facilitated discussion, and the viewing of three short films from the ground-breaking OLIVE Film Collection.

Those who attend will also be connected to accessible mental health resources in the Red Deer region.

“Movies for Mental Health provides students and community with a safe and unique way to talk about mental health and wellness. Attendees make authentic emotional connections to the films, increasing their understanding and building compassion for themselves and their experiences,” explains Art With Impact Program Director Natalie Daley.

Attendees of the workshop last year, which took place at college and university campuses across Canada, described the event as “helpful,” “worthwhile,” “interesting” and “uplifting,” according to a release.

The event is open to RDC students as well as the public, and it is free.
