Red Deer special olympians bring home medals from Alberta Winter Games

Last weekend was an exciting one for 63 Red Deer athletes and coaches who traveled to Calgary for the 2019 Special Olympics Alberta Winter Games.

The Red Deer delegation consisted of three curling teams, three 5-pin bowling teams, a floor hockey team and two speedskaters, and had a very solid showing medal wise.

5-pin bowling teams (Jeremy Garbutt, Matt Mundorf, Dan Critchley, Dave Dunlop, and Ryan Baker) and (Tyler Jennings, Seana Corrigan, Eric Fillinger, Matt Cullen and Laura Hill) won silver medals. In singles competition Matt Mundorf and Dan Critchley won gold, Matt Cullen and Eric Fillinger came home with silver and Laura Hill and Shaunette Duchesneau won bronze.

In curling the team of Michaella Clark, Toryn Holden, Brian Anderson, Rhonda Schochenmaier, and Madison Watt won gold while the team of Mike Sugden, Graham Kryzanowski, David Fodchuk, Alex Fletcher, and Luke Fletcher came home with a silver medal in their division.

Speedskater Tyler Larson won a gold and three silver medals in the men’s division while in the ladies’ division Thomasina Payne came home with a gold and two silver.

Athletes from this competition will be selected to be part of Team Alberta to participate in the National Winter Games in Thunder Bay Ontario in 2020 with the possibility of eventually being chosen to represent Canada at the 2021 World Winter Games in Sweden.
