UCP’s Jason Kenney talks health care ahead of spring vote

EDMONTON – Alberta’s Opposition leader says a United Conservative government would seek to cut the bureaucracy that runs the health system.

Jason Kenney says privately delivered care on minor medical procedures is improving wait times in other jurisdictions.

He says any changes would still be provided for and funded under the public health system.

Kenney made the comments as he revealed the broad strokes of his party’s health policy ahead of the spring election.

Alberta’s health spending is 22-billion-dollars this year — about 40 per cent of the total budget.

Kenney is promising to keep health spending at current levels, but not increase it to keep pace with population growth and inflation.

He says Alberta has the most expensive per-capita health spending in Canada, and he is confident efficiencies can be found without hurting front-line care.

Health Minister Sarah Hoffman says failing to keep pace with population growth and inflation is the same as making deep cuts to the system.
