Gagnon says construction of the facility is on schedule and that The City will be able to move into the building by mid-May. They will then work with the YMCA to start planning their summer programs and have them ready to launch for July 1.

The partnership with the YMCA is expected to create about 14 full-time jobs and between 30-50 part-time positions.

Meantime, Red Deer’s newest sports facility is also on track to open up this spring at Motorworks Field at St. Joseph High School.

Last year, city council approved funding for the pickleball courts during the 2018 Capital Budget. Construction on the facility began last summer, and it is on track to open this spring.

The facility, which will be similar to the downtown tennis dome, has a total of 20 courts that will be used to host pickleball tournaments. It will also be open to the public and interested schools and community groups.

“We are really excited to be able to offer this opportunity to the community,” Gagnon says.

“The Red Deer Pickleball Club will be operating the court on behalf of The City. We have an operating agreement with them and they are looking forward to working with the schools and offering the community the opportunity to come in and try pickleball and learn more about the ‘fastest growing sport in north America.’”
