Eight-year-old boy among four people killed in head-on Newfoundland collision

WHITBOURNE, N.L. — An eight-year-old boy is among four people who died after a head-on crash in eastern Newfoundland Sunday.

Two SUVs collided on an undivided section of the Trans-Canada Highway on the Avalon Peninsula just before 5 p.m., police said Monday.

The boy and his parents, a 41-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman from Conception Bay South, were pronounced dead at the scene, RCMP said.

The driver of the second vehicle — an 18-year-old woman from the Burin Peninsula — also died at the scene. A 16-year-old boy who was a passenger in the second vehicle was taken to hospital in St. John’s with critical injuries.

Although the cause of the crash is still under investigation, police say the driver of the Chevrolet Equinox SUV with the family appears to have crossed the centre line.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Boyd Merrill said the driver, heading eastbound, appears to have veered into oncoming traffic and hit the Honda Pilot SUV driven by the 18-year-old woman.

He said the road was wet, and there was fog and drizzle.

“Traffic reconstruction crews are still piecing the accident together physically as well as analyzing witness statements and video,” Merrill said. “The big component here now is the office of the chief medical examiner is conducting his forensic evaluations to determine if there were medical causes for this crash.”

Police have several witness statements and are examining footage of the accident captured by dashboard cameras, he said.

“There are a number of witnesses that saw and recorded the collision. That will assist us greatly in determining what exactly happened. When the police get this information it’s first hand, irrefutable evidence.”
