McCarty anxious to prove himself in Rebels return

Aug 30, 2017 | 7:06 AM

Frank Sinatra once sang about love being better the second time around.

Mason McCarty is hoping that’s the case when it comes to him and the Red Deer Rebels.

The 20-year old forward was re-acquired by the club from the Saskatoon Blades in May in exchange for the Rebels second round selection in the 2017 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.

McCarty, originally a fourth round pick of the Rebels in 2012, is entering his fourth full season in the WHL. He was traded to Saskatoon in the 2014-15 season in the deal that brought Nelson Nogier to Red Deer.

McCarty has played in 156 games in the WHL, scoring 47 goals and 36 assists for 83 points. He was particularly strong last year on a Blades team that missed the playoffs, putting up 37 points in 45 games.

The Blackie, Alberta native is fully healthy as he competes in Rebels training camp after missing 27 games last year with a knee injury.

McCarty is one of three overaged players currently battling for roster spots with the Rebels. Goalie Lasse Petersen and forward Grayson Pawlenchuk are the others.

Tonight, the Rebels hit the ice to wrap up training camp with their annual intrasquad Black and White Game.

Game time at the Enmax Centrium is 7 p.m. Admission is a $2 donation to the Red Deer Firefighters Children’s Charity.

Preseason action begins Friday night when the Rebels host Calgary.
