Smiles all around as kids head back to school

A new school year is finally upon us.

The return to classes is made even more exciting this year by the debut of some brand new schools.

In Red Deer, Don Campbell Elementary in Inglewood opened its doors to about 360 public students.

“Any time you get a new school, it’s a blessing and it also means a lot of work,” says Red Deer Public Schools Superintendent Stu Henry. “Even redrawing our boundaries was a huge exercise taking about a year and a half trying to figure out where the students are going to go and where are the students going to come from for the new school.”

Jan Ludwig, Campbell’s daughter, teaches Grade 2 at the school and could hardly contain her excitement on opening day.

“I got so excited to see so many of my kids and families from last year. To now enjoy them in this new setting is just fabulous,” she says. “It’s very innovative — new learning spaces, a real focus on community — school community, neighbourhood community, classroom community. We’re very happy.”

Principal Cam Pizzey says the school was built with collaboration in mind and staff will use that to their full advantage.

“The collaboration amongst classes will be first and foremost. Every place in the school is a learning space,” he says. “A lot of us come from the traditional classroom where it’s closed, but with these garage doors between classrooms, we have just an opportunity maybe other schools don’t have at this point.”

St. Joseph Catholic High School in Timberlands is hosting an orientation session today for Grade 10 students with classes for all students starting Friday. A grand opening celebration is set for Sept. 20.

In Blackfalds, St. Gregory the Great Catholic School opens today and will also celebrate its grand opening on Sept. 20.

Catholic students in Rocky Mtn. House are back in class starting Tuesday.

Students in the Chinook’s Edge School Division are also back in class starting today. Wolf Creek Public Schools students return on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, drivers are reminded that new playground zones are now in effect in Red Deer from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on school days. The one school zone in Eastview/Morrisroe is in effect from 8 a.m. until 4:30.
