Public meeting to discuss seniors’ and long-term healthcare concerns

A healthcare crisis in Alberta, according to some, needs to be addressed immediately.

A public meeting is being held Tuesday night at the Snell Auditorium, located downstairs at the downtown branch of the Red Deer Public Library, starting at 7 p.m.

Danielle Klooster, spokesperson for families living at Community Care Cottages in Red Deer and Lacombe, says choosing where one lives should be a fundamental right for Alberta seniors.

“Where we want to go with this meeting is talk about the crisis in long-term care,” She says. “The fact that there are not enough beds, the care is really terrible in many instances and despite that, the system really wants to force people into the system and isn’t open to supporting any kind of alternative.”

Klooster adds there is an appeal in the works which she hopes will demonstrate just how negatively some seniors have been impacted by their interaction with the system.

“It’s to try and get momentum around the legal challenge that we’re mounting, and to bring awareness and gather public support because this might not even be able to be changed for our parents’ generation, but we’d like to see it changed before we get there, and that’s going to be a long, hard journey.”

In April, Wildrose leader Brian Jean visited Maple Cottage, a private care facility in Red Deer run by Community Care Cottages. At the time, Jean called out the NDP on the issue and said that the private sector can be a good partner with the public sector to provide better quality of life for seniors.
