Alberta proposes stronger protections for patients through health legislation
The Government of Alberta is proposing legislative changes to strengthen protections for people receiving care, improve health-system accountability and clarify funding rules for medical services.
Bill 39, the Health Statutes Amendment Act, 2026 (No. 2), includes changes to several provincial health laws, including legislation governing patient safety, mental health, laboratory services and addiction treatment.
“When Albertans are at their most vulnerable, they should be able to count on safe, dignified care. These proposed changes would strengthen protections, reinforce accountability and give families greater confidence that their loved ones are protected,” said Justin Wright, Minister of Primary and Preventative Health Services.
Amendments to the Protection for Persons in Care Act would clarify which publicly funded care and support providers fall under the legislation and improve processes for investigating reports of abuse, appeals, compliance and enforcement.
