City council receives report on current and future fire mitigation efforts
Red Deer city council received an update from administration on the City of Red Deer’s approach to reducing wildfire risk and accepted the report as information.
Wildfire mitigation, administration wrote in the report, is a coordinated effort to protect the city’s natural areas, public assets, private property, and community identity.
It has been a city program for over two decades and has evolved to changing environmental conditions, community concerns, scientific knowledge, and regulatory requirements.
The report came as city council directed administration during its Feb. 26 meeting to review the city’s practice respecting the removal of deadfall from wooded areas, taking into consideration residents’ concerns and lessons learned from the Jasper Wildfire, and to return to council with a report and any recommended amendments no later than the end of Q3 2026.
