Lacombe decides on clever name for new ice resurfacer

It probably doesn’t run on diesel, but Lacombe’s new Olympia ice resurfacer has a name that’s all about family.

Meet Frost & Furious, which is a name chosen following a city-wide naming contest.

The contest garnered 374 submissions, with a public vote on the finalists getting 147 ballots cast. The eventual winner earned 30 per cent of the popular vote.

Interestingly, five people submitted the name, so a draw had to be done for a winner, which is resident Michelle Robinson.

“The response to this contest speaks to the pride residents have in our community and recreation facilities,” said Mayor Thalia Hibbs.

“With hundreds of name submissions and strong participation in the final vote, residents helped choose a creative and memorable name for an important piece of equipment that serves arena users year-round. Thank you to everyone who took part in helping bring Frost & Furious to life.”

The resurfacer was purchased through a partnership between Lacombe and Lacombe County.

“Lacombe County is proud to partner with the City of Lacombe on investments that support recreation and community well-being,” said Lacombe County Reeve John Ireland.

“It’s been exciting to see residents engage with this project, and we’re pleased to help support facilities and amenities that serve families, athletes, and community groups for years to come.”

The city says the new machine will help maintain safe, high-quality ice conditions for athletes, recreational users, and community groups for many years to come.
