A pair of players with central Alberta ties will be suiting up for Team Canada at the 2026 U17 World Challenge.

Red Deer product Madden Daneault and Red Deer Rebels forward Chace Turchak were named to the Team Canada White roster on Wednesday.

They are just two of 44 players who will don the maple leaf for Canada Red and Canada White at the tournament slated to take place from Nov. 1-7 in Oakville, Ont.

“We are excited to unveil the 44 athletes who have earned the opportunity to represent Canada at the U17 World Challenge in Oakville, as this is an important step in their development and progression through the Program of Excellence,” Millar said. “Many of these players will wear the Maple Leaf for the first time and be introduced to international competition, and we know all 44 are excited to play for Canada and attempt to win a fourth consecutive gold medal.”

Daneault, 15, leads the Western Hockey League’s Kelowna Rockets in scoring with 10 points (3G, 7A) in seven games.

He’s allowed to play up to 34 games in the WHL this year, but he’ll play with the U18 AAA Red Deer Chiefs of the Alberta Elite Hockey League when he’s not in Kelowna.

He was selected by the Rockets first overall in the 2026 WHL Prospects Draft.

Meanwhile, Turchak, who’s in his rookie season with the Rebels, has one goal in nine games. The 16-year-old earned a spot in Red Deer after recording 45 points in 36 games with the U18 AAA Calgary Buffaloes last season.

He was taken by the Rebels 30th overall in the second round of the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft.

The 2026 U17 World Challenge begins with Canada White taking on Czechia and Canada Red matching up against Finland on Nov. 1.

Teams will play two preliminary-round games before the second- and third-place teams in Group A and B cross over for the quarterfinals on Nov. 5.

The first-place teams in each group will advance to the semifinals on Nov. 6, and the tournament will conclude with medal games on Nov. 7.

TSN will provide coverage of the medal games.

The last four gold medal games have featured at least one Canadian team, with Canada White winning gold in 2023 and 2024, and Canada Red claiming gold for the first time in 2025.
