Winnipeg’s NSL expansion franchise to play out of new modular stadium

WINNIPEG — Winnipeg’s Northern Super League expansion franchise will play out of a new modular stadium at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex, the league announced Tuesday.

The league says the new stadium, installed by the Vancouver-based SixFive Stadiums, was made possible by an $8.5-million investment from the NSL, the federal government, the provincial government and City of Winnipeg.

The federal government said it is investing “more than $2.1 million” in the new soccer facility through its Build Communities Strong Fund.

“The NSL is grateful for this funding, which will ensure our players have modern, professional facilities that help Canada attract and retain the best players in the world,” said NSL president Christina Litz.

The stadium will feature a capacity of more than 4,000, with premium suites, upgraded lighting and FIFA-grade turf. It will offer pop-up food vendor options on game days.

The NSL — the first professional women’s soccer league in Canada — announced Winnipeg as the league’s seventh franchise in July.

The team is scheduled to begin play next season.

“This is the kind of moment you dream about as a young player,” said Desiree Scott, co-founder and vice president of community and player experience, Winnipeg NSL. “Growing up in Winnipeg, playing on a pitch like this with a professional women’s team to cheer for was something I could only imagine.

“To see Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex transformed into a world-class home for our team is an incredibly emotional and proud moment. This stadium is going to be vibrant, loud, and full of energy. I can’t wait to see our community rally behind this team.”
