The 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Medicine Hat wrapped up last week, and multiple central Albertans returned with some hardware.

With approximately 1,700 participants and 1,500 volunteers, the week-long tournament featured 10 different sports and concluded on Saturday.

The sports included athletics, basketball, bocce, ten-pin bowling, golf, powerlifting, rhythmic gymnastics, soccer, softball, and swimming.

Red Deer’s Brett Altheim, Liam Brereton, Ivan Cherviakoff, Harvey Coutre, Alex Fletcher, Luke Fletcher, David Fodchuk, Ronald McTeer, Sylvan Lake’s Deegan Gulak, Red Deer County’s Owen Morris, and Stettler’s Matt Mundorf were part of the Red Deer Rockets softball team that achieved a silver medal.

On Friday, they fell 17-11 to a team from B.C. in the gold-medal game, bringing home some hardware.

“We are so incredibly proud of each and every one of you! You played your hearts out, represented Red Deer and Alberta with pride, and showed everyone what teamwork, determination, sportsmanship, and heart are all about,” Special Olympics Red Deer wrote in a Facebook post. “What an amazing accomplishment. Hold those heads high, Rockets! You gave it everything you had, and your entire Red Deer Special Olympics family is so proud of you.”

The Rockets went 3-0 in round-robin play before defeating Quebec 22-11 in the semi-finals.
