Alberta government announces town hall series, new website on AI data centres

The provincial government says it is doing a couple of things to share information on AI data centres.

A series of four town halls will be held.

The first meeting will be held in Ponoka on August 19, followed by Sturgeon County on August 20, a virtual one on August 27, and another in-person get-together in Grande Prairie on September 11.

The three in-person meetings will all start at 6 p.m. Locations have not been picked.

Minister of Technology and Innovation Nate Glubish will attend all four meetings.

“Albertans deserve real answers on what these new infrastructure investments mean for them. This website puts the facts about power, water and community impact in one place, so people can see for themselves how Alberta is responsibly developing AI data centres on our own terms,” says Glubish in a news release from the government.

The province has also started a new website explaining what AI data centres are and why the government thinks they are a good idea.

“The new website explains what data centres are, why they are being built here, the opportunities they create, how Alberta’s approach differs from other jurisdictions and the safeguards that protect Alberta’s electricity system, water resources, communities and taxpayers. Each answer links to public sources so people can review the information directly,” Glubish said in the same release.
