A new middle school planned for northeast Red Deer has moved into the design stage.

Timber Ridge, part of Red Deer Public Schools, will serve Grades 6-8 and have a capacity of 605 students.

It’s one of 41 schools the provincial government recently shared are being fast-tracked through the Schools Now Program, and one of 159 active school projects around the province.

“Red Deer Public is pleased to confirm that the project has received approval to advance from the planning stage into the design stage. This approval reflects the completion of several months of planning, which included consulting project stakeholders, confirming site requirements, and developing initial design concepts,” a statement from Red Deer Public Schools says.

“The design phase will have the project team develop the schematic design for the school in ongoing coordination with the Province and community stakeholders. Regular reviews are scheduled to ensure the design meets provincial standards and Red Deer Public’s needs.”

Subject to the successful completion of design and required approvals, the division anticipates construction could begin in late 2027 or early 2028.

The provincial government notes construction could take up to two years.

This project has been in the works for several years, and on the division’s priority list dating back to at least 2019.

It will be located at the corner of Teasdale Drive and Thomlison Avenue.

A budget for the project has not been disclosed.
