Ex-city manager: The destructive implications of the proposed Highway 2 realignment
In response to ‘Highway 2 rewidening project continues to generate discussion within Red Deer’

Maskepetoon Park is one of Red Deer’s most significant natural areas and an important component of the Waskasoo Park system. The park contains unique wetlands, a significant stand of tamarack forest, important wildlife habitat, and a valued recreational area enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.
Alberta Transportation is currently advancing plans to reconstruct and widen Highway 2 and its associated river crossings through the Maskepetoon Park area. Based on information presented during recent public information sessions, the proposed alignment is projected to result in the loss of approximately 25% of the park, including portions of its wetlands and tamarack forest.
