Red Deer County lifts fire restriction

Jun 1, 2026 | 9:47 AM

Red Deer County has lifted its fire restriction due to the recent substantial rainfall.

The county says it was lifted as of 10 a.m. on Monday after the restriction was originally put in place at the end of April.

Fire permits are now available online at rdcounty.ca. The county requires a fire permit for all open fires year-round, except for safe, acceptable residential fire pits within the county.

According to the county, safe, acceptable residential fire pits need to be:

  • A minimum of 3 metres clearance measured from the nearest fireplace edge to the nearest edge of buildings, property lines, or other combustible material;
  • A height not exceeding 0.6 metres when measured from the surrounding grade to the top of the pit opening;
  • Equipped with a mesh screen with opening no larger than 13mm;
  • Enclosed sides made from bricks, concrete blocks, heavy gauge metal, or other non-combustible materials; and
  • Not located over any underground utilities or under aboveground wires.
