May 9, 2026 | 9:00 AM

Registration is now open for the 9th annual GhostRaiders Invitational.

The event takes place May 28 at the Glendale Skatepark, with students from across central Alberta competing. It is hosted by Lindsay Thurber, which also runs a Business of Skateboarding course.

More than 50 riders and 20 schools are anticipated.

“Registration is open, and we’re encouraging students of all skill levels to come out and be part of it,” said RJ Willms, teacher at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School.

“It’s not just about competition, it’s about giving students a place to express themselves, try something new, and connect with others who share the same interests.”

Warm-ups begin at 9:30 a.m. with the competition running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants can compete using skateboards, BMX bikes or scooters. Participants can enjoy lunch, a shirt and be entered to win prizes as part of their registration fee of $10.

Students in Grades 7-9 will compete in the junior division, while Grades 10-12 will compete in the senior division. Judges will include industry representatives and alumni who have continued into the skateboarding world, bringing valuable insight and experience to the event.

“What makes this event different is how much of it is student-led,” said Willms.

“From planning and promotions to running the event itself, students are building real-world skills including problem-solving, teamwork and leadership, in a way that feels meaningful to them.”
