Nine Red Deer lacrosse players have been selected to represent Team Alberta at the upcoming Tackaberry Trophy tournament in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Happening Aug. 11-15, the annual tournament crowns the Lacrosse Canada U17 male box lacrosse champion.

Bronson Scott, Cooper Northcott, Dylan Turner, Gavin McEvoy, Gavin Roth, Hadin Nelson, Kian Siemens, Tucker Istace and Tyrell Strauss (G), all from the Red Deer Lacrosse Association’s U17A Chiefs team, will try to help Alberta bring home a national title.

“This is an incredible accomplishment for these young athletes and a proud moment for our association,” said RDLA President Chris Mandrusiak.

“Having nine players named to Team Alberta speaks to the strength of our development system and the dedication of our athletes, coaches and families. We are excited to watch them represent Red Deer on the national stage.”

Additionally, Red Deer’s head coach, Darren Kinnear, will man the bench for Team Alberta.

Kinnear joined the Chiefs in 2023 as an assistant coach with the U15A team, then became head coach in 2024. He most recently led the U17A group.

In his tenure, he captured two league titles, two provincial championships, and won the internationally attended Canada Day Tournament in Calgary.

“It’s an honour to lead Team Alberta and to work with such a talented group of athletes,” said Kinnear. “Having so many Chiefs players on the roster is a testament to their commitment and the culture we’ve built in Red Deer. This group has a lot of potential and we’re focused on competing at a high level in Halifax.”

The Tackaberry Trophy has been awarded since 2007. Alberta last won in 2018.
