Sylvan Lake Mayor addresses comments made by town councillor on social media
Sylvan Lake Mayor Megan Hanson has released a statement after several complaints were made by residents following comments made on social media by a councillor over the weekend, regarding the province’s proposed Bill 28.
Bill 28, the Municipal Affairs and Housing Statutes Amendment Act, 2026, would amend three pieces of legislation: the Municipal Government Act, Libraries Act and the Alberta Housing Act.
The comments were made by Councillor Teej Johannesson in a Facebook post by Sylvan Lake Pride, which was published by the community organization regarding the bill.
Hanson said in an emailed statement to rdnewsNOW, there are clear expectations as well as a policy that outlines how council and staff are expected to engage with the public.
However, because the provincial government has removed municipalities’ authority to enforce codes of conduct for elected officials, there is currently no way for the town to enforce consequences.
“This means that while the behaviour in question does not reflect the views or standards of Sylvan Lake council, there is currently no mechanism for the town to formally investigate or impose sanctions related to conduct on social media or elsewhere,” she said in the statement.
“We value a diversity of opinions and healthy debate—different perspectives make us stronger—but it’s important that those opinions are shared respectfully, without name-calling, shaming, mocking, or yelling.”
Hanson added that Sylvan Lake prides itself on being inclusive, respectful, and welcoming.
“The comments of one councillor do not represent the values of our council or our community as a whole,” Hanson added. “We understand why residents are concerned. While enforcement options are limited, these conversations still matter—they reinforce expectations and the importance of respectful leadership.”
Sylvan Lakers who would like to pursue the matter further are asked to contact Alberta Municipal Affairs. The Mayor added that oversight of this area now falls under the province.
Alberta Municipal Affairs can be contacted by phone at 780-427-2732 or by contacting the office of the Minister of Municipal Affairs, Dan Williams at 780-427-3744.
