$200 million for 2026-27

Alberta investing $600 million into modular school classrooms

Apr 21, 2026 | 12:15 PM

The provincial government has announced it is investing $600 million over the next three years to install more modular classrooms.

In a release, the government notes student enrolment is growing, with more than 80,000 new students over the last three years. They also point to “unsustainable federal immigration policies and record-level interprovincial migration” as reasons for why schools are under pressure.

For the 2026-27 school year, 189 new modular classrooms will be installed, with 12 washroom units, 10 replacements, and 29 relocations. In all, it’s estimated to add 5,450 student spaces.

“Student enrolment is growing, and we’re making sure schools can keep up,” says Demetrios Nicolaides, education and childcare minister.

“That’s why we’re building new schools across Alberta, with 161 projects underway right now. Modular classrooms help relieve crowding in the meantime, while permanent schools are built.”

The bulk of new modulars are in Edmonton and Calgary, but a total of 68, plus seven washrooms, are being installed in other school divisions.

That includes (but is not limited to):

Grande Prairie/North region

Grande Prairie and District Catholic: 4 relocations

Grande Prairie Public: 2 classrooms

Peace Wapiti Public: 2 classrooms

Pembina Hills: 1 classroom

Medicine Hat region

Medicine Hat Catholic: 1 classroom

Medicine Hat Public: 6 relocations

Prairie Rose Public: 4 classrooms + washroom, 1 replacement

Red Deer region

Chinook’s Edge: 3 classrooms + washroom, 1 replacement

Other

Conseil Scolaire Centre-Nord: 4 classrooms

In 2025-26, Alberta’s government invested $100 million to purchase 115 new modular classrooms, supporting 2,825 new student spaces and 275 relocated spaces.
