Stettler RCMP arrest youth after threats made to school

Apr 16, 2026 | 1:55 PM

Stettler RCMP have arrested a youth after an investigation into alleged threats made through Snapchat to shoot students at the William E. Hay School in Stettler.

Mounties say they received reports of the threats at 10:15 a.m. that were made to both the school and students on April 15, and officers quickly obtained evidence to support an arrest.

The individual youth suspect is now in custody, and charges are pending for uttering threats.

As a result, the youth will be taken before a Justice of the Peace in order to determine future court dates and determine release status.

The RCMP say they do not believe there is an ongoing risk to students and staff.

“The Stettler RCMP School Resource Officer and Detachment are currently engaged working with the school, and out of an abundance of caution will have an ongoing police presence,” they said in a press release.

Clearview Public Schools said in an emailed statement they were made aware of a potential threat involving Wm. E. Hay School on Wednesday evening.

“The RCMP were also notified at that time and responded immediately. We have been advised that the individual involved is currently with the RCMP, and their investigation is ongoing,” as stated in the email.

“Based on the information available, the decision was made to keep the school open. Out of an abundance of caution, additional safety measures are in place today at both Wm. E. Hay School and Stettler Elementary School, including secured entrances and the presence of staff and RCMP at entry points. RCMP also remain on site to support the schools. The safety of our students and staff is always our highest priority. We take all potential threats seriously and continue to work closely with the RCMP to ensure our schools remain safe learning environments.”

Clearview added they have shared information directly with families and will continue to provide updates as appropriate.
