Investigators are looking into the cause of a house fire in Red Deer’s Timberlands neighbourhood Saturday night.

Curtis Schaefer, acting chief of emergency services, says crews received multiple calls of a structure fire on Truant Crescent shortly after 9:30 p.m..

“The first arriving engine discovered defensive fire conditions upon arrival, striking a second alarm due to the fire conditions,” he explained. “We have four engines and a ladder on scene currently, approximately 21 firefighters working on this fire. Heavy fire conditions when they arrived. We do have it monitoring right now. We are concerned about collapse of the house.”

Schaefer added, however, that no one was inside the house at the time of the fire, thankfully, and that no injuries have been reported.

“A little bit of damage to the exposures on either side of the house, but again, everyone was able to be safely evacuated from both those homes as well,” said Schaefer.

He said it’s too early to know at this point where the fire started or what caused it.

“We’re good for wind tonight so it wasn’t a wind driven fire, which was good. The closeness of other homes is always a concern for us and so thankfully our crews did a fantastic job of protecting those other homes to minimal damage only,” noted Schaefer.

He is unsure of a damage estimate at this time, but acknowledged, the fire was a major one.

“It’s a significant damage to that home. I don’t believe it would be repairable at this time,” said Schaefer.

Schaefer added, however, the occupants of the home do have somewhere to stay.
