‘Show the world who we are’: Peterman and Gallant motivated to bring home gold at Olympics

Former Red Deerian Jocelyn Peterman hopes her pursuit of a gold medal in the Winter Olympic Games will inspire the next generation.

During an online availability with media members from across Canada, Peterman was asked about being the lone representative from Red Deer and central Alberta in the upcoming 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.

She said she has a lot of pride in being from Red Deer and hopes to represent the community well.

“It’s such an incredible sporting community. There’s really a great group of volunteers and people who are passionate about curling and passionate about a lot of sports there. I’m honoured to represent them. I think there are a lot of incredible athletes from the Red Deer area… Hopefully that can continue, and there will be some future curlers from Red Deer down the road.”

In case you didn’t know, Peterman and her husband, Brett Gallant, are set to represent Canada at the Olympics in mixed doubles curling.

The duo will head to Italy on Jan. 27 with the mixed doubles curling tournament set to take place from February 4-10, with 10 countries competing. The top four nations will move on to the medal rounds.

That week will be spent preparing to face the top curlers in the world. Although they won’t get to hit the ice until the day before the tournament begins.

“Obviously, we’re motivated. We want to be on that podium… We are just working really hard at being fully committed to our preparation, having no regrets, and making ourselves proud,” Peterman said. “We know if we do that and we stick to our processes, we are going to have some good results. That’s our primary focus right now.”

“We’re ready,” Gallant added. “We’ve played together preparing for this moment for a long time, so it’s just about seizing the moment now. The work has been put in, and we’re ready to go. I think at this moment we’re just excited to get started.”

Last January, Peterman and Gallant took a major step in their journey to the Olympics after they won gold at the 2025 Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Trials in Nova Scotia, defeating Team Rachel Homan.

However, they secured their spot in Italy after finishing sixth place at the 2025 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in Fredericton, NB, last May.

Both Peterman, 32, and Gallant, 35, competed at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. They both were on their own respective teams and saw success, including Peterman, who finished fifth on Team Jennifer Jones, and Gallant, who won bronze with Team Brad Gushue.

Coach Laine Peters said Peterman and Gallant are incredible athletes who put in a lot of time to hone their craft.

“They’re so dedicated, and they work so well together as a pair. There’s a ton of respect, a ton of support,” Peters said. “It’s such a pleasure to work with athletes like Brett and Jocelyn, who put so much into the game. It makes my job pretty easy because they’re just so willing to do whatever it takes.”

Most recently, the couple had their final tune-up event before the Olympics, where they competed in mixed doubles at the Sherwood Park Curling Club.

Gallant said it went well and explained they’re still learning new things as a pair.

“We just have this feeling now of let’s go get them and show the world who we are.”
