Chamber calls Red Deer County’s draft budget ‘disciplined’

The Red Deer District Chamber of Commerce says Red Deer County’s draft budget is focused on the fundamentals.

CEO Frank Creasey also said in a release that it contains disciplined spending, predictable taxation, and core infrastructure along with service levels which keep the region competitive.

“Those priorities matter deeply to our members, and they are reflected throughout the County’s 2026 plan,” Creasey stated Monday following what the chamber is calling a strategic review of the county’s proposed budget.

County council is set to debate the budgets Dec. 16. It was originally slated for earlier this month, but council deferred it back to administration so they could get more feedback from the public.

“A clear long-term financial plan is exactly what businesses look for when making investment decisions,” added Matt Wear, Red Deer District Chamber board president.

“This fiscal discipline and infrastructure investment supports stability and keeps Red Deer County a leader in regional competitiveness.”

The chamber says whether it’s bridge rehabilitation, or paving to the Junction 42 water reservoir, or even the Gas Alley transit expansion, essential infrastructure is being addressed.

They also believe the budget points to reduced red tape, and procurement modernization.

The county has included a two per cent cap to operating expense growth, which the chamber says is a critical step.

They also acknowledge the significant drop in capital spending, from $53.4 million to a proposed $36.4 million.
