RDP Athletics recap: November 21-23

This past week, the Red Deer Polytechnic curling team had a successful opening weekend.

Both volleyball squads earned victories over Concordia University.

The RDP Queens basketball team split its weekend series while the Kings fell short against the St. Mary’s University Lightning.

The RDP Queens hockey team was edged by Lakeland College.

Here is a summary of the recent results:

Curling

Kings & Queens | Tournament #1 | Airdrie Curling Club | November 21-23

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens curling teams had a good showing at the three-day ACAC Tournament #1 in Airdrie.

The RDP Kings went 4-1, defeating Concordia University 9-1, Lakeland College 8-4, SAIT 8-6 and the University of Alberta Augustana 7-4. The Kings were edged 3-2 by the NAIT Ooks.

The Queens finished with a 4-2 record. They earned wins over NAIT (10-5), the University of Alberta Augustana (11-3), Concordia University (11-3) and Portage College (10-3). They dropped games to Lakeland College (6-5) and SAIT (8-5).

Hockey

Queens at Rustlers | Friday, November 21

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens hockey team was edged 3-2 in double overtime by the Lakeland College Rustlers.

Natalie Tychkowsky (Bachelor of Education) and Rylee Mepham (Bachelor of Education) scored for the Queens.

Tora Ward, a third-year goaltender from Saskatoon, made 38 saves in the RDP net.

Queens vs. Rustlers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, November 22

The second-place RDP Queens (9-4) were blanked 2-0 by the top-seed Rustlers (11-1) at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

Basketball

Queens vs. Lightning | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, November 21

The RDP Queens basketball team defeated the St. Mary’s University Lightning 59-56. Lacombe’s Mia Cunningham led the Queens with 22 points.

Queens at Lightning | Saturday, November 22

The fifth-seeded Lightning (3-4) picked up an 88-57 decision over the sixth-place Queens (3-6) in Calgary.

Avery Stypula (Open Studies) recorded 19 points for the Polytechnic.

Kings vs. Lightning | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, November 21

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings basketball team was downed 92-71 by the Lightning at home. William Tcherkachine (Bachelor of Arts in Multidisciplinary Studies) led the Polytechnic with 21 points.

Kings at Lightning | Saturday, November 22

The seventh-seeded RDP Kings (1-8) dropped a 108-80 decision to the second-place Lightning (5-2) on the road.

Tong Akol, a second-year guard from Calgary, scored 15 points for the Kings.

Volleyball

Queens vs. Thunder | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, November 22

The South’s top seed RDP Queens volleyball team (6-2) defeated the North’s fifth-place Concordia University Thunder (4-4) in three sets (25-16, 25-19 and 25-21).

Nadia McKeage (Bachelor of Kinesiology) accumulated 11 kills (0.389), seven digs, three aces, one assist and one stuff block for the Queens.

Kings vs. Thunder | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, November 22

The South’s second-place Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Volleyball team (6-2) dropped the North’s fourth-place Thunder (2-6) in straight sets (25-18, 25-20 and 25-19).

Zach Neufeld, a fifth-year outside hitter from Edmonton, had five kills (0.333), one dig and one assist for RDP.
