Events happening at RDPL to mark Hindu Heritage Month

Red Deerians are invited to help celebrate Hindu Heritage Month this November.

There are multiple opportunities to do so, including a First Thursday series concert on Nov. 13.

That will run from 12:15-1:00 at the downtown branch of the Red Deer Public Library. This special concert features Classical Bansuri Flute music with the Chockalingam Flute Trio.

A seniors only event will take place that same day, from 1:30-2:30, at the Red Deer Hamlets.

Then, on Nov. 15, a Hindu Heritage Day event will run from 11:00-2:00, with a community celebration at the downtown library featuring a program of folk dances, songs, and small skits.

From 11:00-11:30 that same day at the downtown branch, there will be a special Hindu Heritage Month edition of Stories & More for Littles.

Additionally, the RDPL’s Lit Line this month will offer quotes from Hindu culture.

You can call the Lit Line all month at 403-342-9100 to hear spiritual quotes from the rich philosophical heritage of Hinduism and its philosophers, saints, mystics and poets.

“The mission is to involve and embrace beautiful Canadian multiculturalism, and create a sense of belonging for the Hindu community in Red Deer via the ancient diversity that Hindu culture has offered for millennia,” says Vaishali Mahavir, volunteer with the Hindu Heritage Society, and Coalition of Hindus of North America.

“What brings us together is our economy, and multicultural celebrations like this not only boost our economy, but also keeps us all connected, and encourage a feeling of belonging. It enhances community interaction and engagement, bonds us with our neighbours, helps us understand each other, and what more do we need to thrive harmoniously together?”

All events for Hindu Heritage Month are put on in collaboration between the Red Deer Public Library, the Hindu Cultural Society of Central Alberta, the Hindu Heritage Society, and the Coalition of Hindus of North America.
