Offensive outburst carries Oil Kings to victory over Rebels

The Edmonton Oil Kings piled on an abundance of goals in a 7-3 victory over the Red Deer Rebels on Wednesday.

The Oil Kings got out to an early lead and never gave it up, with two goals from Joe Iginla followed by five other goal scorers that made it on the score sheet.

For the Rebels, they were led by a two-point night by Beckett Hamilton and Talon Brigley.

Rebels goaltender Matthew Kondro made 30 saves, and Edmonton netminder Ethan Simcoe made 24 saves on 27 shots.

The Oil Kings jumped out to an early lead with a goal from Jensen March just over two and a half minutes into the game.

Rebels Beckett Hamilton found the equalizer with 14:58 remaining in the opening period. The second-year forward skated up the right side of the ice and through the offensive zone before firing a shot past the goaltender.

The Oil Kings added one more before the conclusion of the first 20 minutes. Just 2:23 after Hamilton’s goal, Edmonton’s Poul Anderson put the Oil Kings up 2-1.

In the second period, Rebels forward Samuel Drancak tied it at two off an opportunity in front of the net. Drancak knocked in a rebound following a point shot from defenceman Aleksey Chichkin.

However, the rest of the period was owned by the Oil Kings, who scored three straight goals from Ethan MacKenzie, Max Curran, and Joe Iginla to lead 5-2.

Iginla’s tally came on the power play with over a minute and a half left in the middle frame.

In the third period, the Rebels pulled within two of tying it after captain Talon Brigley tipped a shot past the goaltender on the power play. The tip by Brigley came off a hard shot by Hamilton at 3:12 into the final frame.

From there, it was all Edmonton who scored two more goals from Iginla and forward Andrew O’Neill to secure the victory.

The Rebels now sit in 10th place in the Eastern Conference with a 5-10-0-2 record.

Next up, the Rebels will head to Regina on Friday to face the Pats at 6 p.m. mountain time, followed by an afternoon game on Sunday in Moose Jaw at 3 p.m.
