Sylvan Lakers invited to attend evening program on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Sep 29, 2025 | 12:55 PM

To honour the people affected by residential schools, the Town of Sylvan Lake is inviting the public to attend an evening program on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to walk together, listen, and reflect.

On Tuesday, Sept. 30, the program begins at 6 p.m. at the Municipal Government Building where the town will address those in attendance and distribute orange shirts.

The orange shirt march to Centennial Park will begin shortly after, led by the beat of a hand drum.

Once they arrive at the Let Them Play mural by 6:30 p.m. at the park, participants will gather for an evening of reflection and hear from community leaders.

They will also witness songs from drummers and singers, and stories shared by Elders and Indigenous representatives.

The evening will continue at the tipis in Centennial Park at 7 p.m., where Elders will share wisdom. At that time, tea and bison chili will be available and attendees can take part in placing signed orange cards on the mural as a symbolic gesture.

Sylvan Lake is located on Treaty 6 territory and is part of the homeland of the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3.
