Rebels drop second-straight preseason contest to Hitmen

The Red Deer Rebels dropped their second-straight preseason contest 6-1 to the Calgary Hitmen on Saturday night at the Centrium.

This comes 24 hours after they were shut out by Calgary 5-0 on Friday night on the road.

Head coach Marc Habscheid said the first period was good for his team, the second was atrocious, and the third was fueled by frustration.

“[It was] a learning experience. We had some guys who had never played before so you could see a little bit of rust,” he said. “We understand that but there’s still a mentality you have to have in all of these games and is some areas, I’m not thrilled with it to be honest even though it’s exhibition.”

The Hitmen opened the scoring just over three-and-a-half minutes into the game off the stick of Kale Dach, who capped off an impressive passing play in front of the net, assisted by Ethan Moore.

Red Deer got on the board with 13:44 left in the opening period on a five-on-three powerplay. Defenceman Keith McInnis, who’s from Red Deer, passed it down low to forward Talon Brigley, who slid a pass through the crease to an open Landon MacSwain.

Calgary retook the lead with 10:12 left in the second period off a breakaway goal from forward Andrei Molgachev.

The Hitmen went on to score four more unanswered goals including two in the second and two in the third period. Ethan Moore, Walker Filewich, Logan Brown, and Logan Amrhein all found the back of the net for the Hitmen.

Many of Calgary’s chances and goals came from opportunities in front of the net where players were left uncovered.

“You can’t leave them that unoccupied, that’s just mistakes and those can be corrected. The main thing you’re concerned with is the attitude in terms of how to win,” he said. “We’ve got to play the right way and a lot that, especially in the second period, was shinny… We’re trying to give them some offensive tools but it was just shinny out there and this team isn’t going to play that way.”

In net for the Rebels, goaltender Peyton Shore made 26 saves on 32 shots. Meanwhile, netminder Eric Tu made 17 saves on 18 shots for the Hitmen.

The Rebels will return to the Centrium next Friday, Sept. 12 where they’ll face the Lethbridge Hurricanes at 7 p.m. followed by their final preseason game next Sunday, Sept. 14 in Edmonton against the Oil Kings.

“There’s things we’ve got to get better at for sure but it’s exhibition. At the same time, it’s the mentality that’s important. The execution you’ll get but it’s the mentality… We want to instill a game plan and we need everybody to follow that. If you want to win you’ve got to play together. There’s just a lot of individuality out there.”
