Man sentenced in Red Deer shooting

Sep 5, 2025 | 2:32 PM

Sentencing took place this week for a man charged following a Red Deer shooting in broad daylight last year.

Abdullahi Ahmed Dahir, 36, of no fixed address, was sentenced in Red Deer Court of Justice on Sept. 2, 2025, to 540 days in jail but given 479 days credit for time already served, leaving him with 61 days left to serve. He was also given a firearm prohibition.

Dahir was convicted on counts of possession of a prohibited firearm, and possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm. Six other counts against him were withdrawn.

His co-accused, Jamie Taralynn Ward, 32, of no fixed address, saw all four counts against her withdrawn, on Sept. 2, 2025.

It was on Sept. 19, 2024, at about 10:45 a.m. when RCMP received a report of a shooting at or near the Safe Harbour shelter near downtown.

Police located a 42-year-old male victim with apparent gunshot injuries, which were determined in hospital to be non-life-threatening.

Having identified suspects using CCTV footage of the incident, Red Deer RCMP, with assistance from General Investigations, Police Dog Services and the Crime Reduction team, flooded the area and located the two suspects entering a cab.

Both were arrested without incident, and a handgun was seized.

“Our officers were able quickly respond to this incident and obtain footage of the suspects which was then sent to all responding officers,” said Inspector Heidi Ravenhill, shortly after the arrests.

“This quick action allowed us to quickly locate and safely arrest these armed individuals, ensuring the safety of Red Deer residents.”

As a result of the investigation, RCMP originally charged Abdullahi Ahmed Dahir with:

  • Aggravated assault;
  • Weapons offences (x4);
  • Fail to comply with release conditions;
  • Possession of a firearm contrary to order;
  • Discharge a firearm with intent.

Police also originally charged Jamie Taralynn Ward with:

  • Weapons offences (x3);
  • Possession of a firearm contrary to order;
  • Fail to comply with probation order.
