Modest increase in Red Deer housing starts so far this year

Red Deer has seen a modest increase in housing starts during the first seven months of the year compared to the same time frame last year.

That according to the latest figures released by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) on Monday.

The numbers show Red Deer with a one per cent increase in housing starts from January to July of this year when compared to the same time last year.

According to CMHC, there have been 78 single detached housing starts in the city so far this year, along with 219 other housing starts for a total of 297 to the end of July.

That compares with 47 single detached housing starts in the city from January to July 2024, along with 247 other housing starts for a total of 294 to the end of July 2024.

Elsewhere in the province, Lethbridge saw an increase of 37 per cent, with a total of 412 housing starts in that city from January to the end of July this year, up from 301 during the same time frame last year.

Edmonton, meantime, has seen a 30 per cent increase, with 13,059 total housing starts so far this year, up from 10,056 total housing starts during the first seven months of 2024.

Calgary has seen a 22 per cent increase, with 16,601 total housing starts so far in 2025, up from 13,649 during the same time last year.

Provincially, Alberta has seen a 25 per cent jump in total housing starts from January to the end of July this year.

There have been 32,294 total housing starts throughout the province so far this year, up from 25,812 during the same time in 2024.

Nationally, the country has seen a four per cent increase in total housing starts so far this year.

According to CMHC, there have been 137,875 total housing starts during the first seven months of 2025. That’s up from 133,103 total housing starts during the same months in 2024.
