Red Deer Ride for Dad prostate cancer fundraiser set for Aug. 16

Aug 14, 2025 | 4:31 PM

The Red Deer Ride for Dad group ride is set for this Saturday in support of the fight against prostate cancer.

On Aug. 16, approximately 100 to 125 motorcyclists will parade through Red Deer and other communities with funds raised donated to prostate cancer clinics in Edmonton and Calgary.

Co-chair of the local event, Al Nicks, said they’re looking forward to another great event.

“Awareness is 100 per cent our goal,” he said. “One in seven men are going to deal with prostate cancer in their lifetime. With early detection, there’s almost a 90 to 95 per cent success rate. This is where the awareness comes in of putting on a ride and parading a couple hundred motorcycles around, getting people’s attention, and starting conversations towards men’s health and keeping families together.”

Ride for Dad is a national initiative with 24 chapters across the country.

Nicks explained they fundraise year-round as the Red Deer chapter puts on a few initiatives such as community barbecues, a tattoo show, and are involved in the Touch-a-Truck event.

The ride this Saturday kicks off at 8 a.m. with a pancake breakfast at Turple Bros. powersports store in Gasoline Alley.

The motorists will head out on their route at 9:30 a.m., beginning at Turple Bros. Ltd. before they head to the Blackfalds Co-op and then Pigeon Lake for lunch. They’ll then head to the Gull Lake Golf Course for another stop before they make their way to the Springbrook Multiplex Event Centre for their banquet, silent auction, and award ceremony.

The riders taking part are not only from central Alberta but also from Edmonton and Calgary, plus one is travelling from Kelowna, B.C. to participate.

Nicks added everyone is encouraged to join the ride, even in other types of vehicles.

Ride for Dad started in 2000, and since then has raised over $47 million across Canada.

Those hoping to donate to the cause can do so at any time by clicking the donate button on their website, ridefordad.ca/chapter/red-deer/.

Nicks added they’re still looking for volunteers to help out on ride day.

“We appreciate anything and everything the community gives to us,” Nicks said. “Red Deer has been so supportive of us through the years — they’re alway there for us.”
