BeGrainSafe Week in Canada

Aug 14, 2025 | 6:00 AM

This is BeGrainSafe Week in Canada.

Its purpose is to make sure people know that grain can be dangerous and most people who get covered in grain do not survive.

The Canadian Agricultural Safety Association says the BeGrainSafe program started in 2017 after what it calls in a release “increased grain entrapment fatalities.”

There were 27 people that died of “asphyxiation from grain or soil” from 2011 to 2020 in Canada.

The organization says it can provide workplace training and rescue training for firefighters, along with teaching methods of prevention.

“Grain entrapment is a significant safety risk anywhere that grain is stored — and it can happen in the blink of an eye,” says CASA executive director Sandra Miller in that same release.

She goes on to say that “while grain entrapments often have devastating outcomes, they are preventable through proactive safety measures. That’s why the BeGrainSafe program is committed to providing essential grain safety training and resources to Canadian farming communities in order to highlight the hazards associated with grain and, ultimately, save lives.”

BeGrainSafe Week runs through Aug. 17.
