Lacombe Police Service investigating alleged bank fraud

Jul 8, 2025 | 2:23 PM

A Edmonton man is facing charges after alleged bank fraud that took place at the Royal Bank of Canada in Lacombe.

On July 4, the Lacombe Police Service were called to the bank for suspected fraud after bank staff noticed suspicious activity. Two men were allegedly attempting to access funds from a recently opened account that had been flagged by RBC security.

Police say both men were arrested without incident.

The primary suspect was in possession of a counterfeit Canadian permanent residence card and an Ontario driver’s license.

Police confirmed he had used the falsified documents to open the account and had overdrawn $1,800. A credit card associated with the account also had been given a $10,000 limit but no charges on the card were made. The bank has since closed the account.

As a result, 20-year-old Arshdeep Behniwal of Edmonton is facing charges of fraud over $5,000 and possession of a forged document.

He was later released on an undertaking with conditions to appear in Red Deer Provincial court on August 29th, 2025. The second man was released without charges.

Canada Border Services Agency has also issued formal requests for both individuals to attend their office as part of the ongoing investigation.
