still seeking new operator

City, Heritage Ranch operator reach agreement to keep site open through summer

Jun 6, 2025 | 8:42 PM

In somewhat of a surprising reversal, the City of Red Deer has come to an agreement which will allow the current operator of Heritage Ranch to keep it open through Oct. 6, 2025.

Back on May 26, the city announced it was seeking a new operator to replace Joel Martens, who’d run the show at Heritage Ranch for 15 years.

That includes a swanky restaurant, equine-related excursions, drive-in movies, wedding hosting, and bigger events such as the Spartan Race.

The city had said Martens and his company were no longer meeting the requirements of the contract, meaning all bookings after May 26 would be cancelled, and the site would close for at least three months starting June 9.

Martens told rdnewsNOW in the immediate aftermath he was shocked, adding he was sure he was in good-standing with the city. He also said he’d be challenging the decision legally.

But at 7 p.m. on June 6, the city and Martens issued a joint statement regarding a new compromise.

The agreement allows Martens’ company, Martens Training Inc., to continue operating until Oct. 6 as long as it complies with key conditions.

Over the next several months, Heritage Ranch will remain fully operational, including:

  • Regular restaurant service
  • All existing bookings, including weddings, anniversaries, and corporate events
  • Trail rides and horse experiences
  • Carriage rides and date night offerings
  • Ongoing care and presence of horses at the site

“We wish to express our sincere thanks to the City of Red Deer, our patrons, and the community members who supported us during this period of uncertainty,” said Martens.

The city says it will continue to seek a new operator, with an RFP already out. That closes July 11.

“The City’s priority is ensuring that public spaces like Heritage Ranch continue to serve our community in a meaningful and reliable way,” said Greg Sikora, Parks and Public Works Manager for the city. “This agreement allows for continued service delivery while we work toward a longer-term solution for the site.”
