Future Red Deer middle school gets accelerated by provincial government

May 22, 2025 | 10:13 PM

The Government of Alberta is fast-tracking 11 school projects to the next stage of construction, including one in Red Deer.

The Red Deer school is in the city’s northeast, and will be a middle school for Red Deer Public.

Acceleration of the project will see it go from pre-planning to planning, with approval for the funding to do so coming mid-year as opposed to when the government tables its next budget in February.

“Pre-planning funding helps school boards review potential school projects and find the best options for a future school. Boards are then able to submit detailed project ideas to the government for potential funding,” explains Demetrios Nicolaides, Minister of Education and Childcare.

“The planning and design phases of the construction process include steps that further establish and refine project details so that when the planning and design are complete, they are ready to move to shovels in the ground. Building a school is a large job that requires careful planning, design and collaboration to ensure the school is meeting specific needs and other important requirements.”

According to Red Deer Public Schools, this school will have 600 students, and it was originally announced as part of the province’s 2023 budget.

It will be located at the corner of Teasdale Drive and Thomlison Avenue in Timber Ridge.

There is no timeline for completion.

“We are excited the Government of Alberta has moved our new middle school project in Timberlands from the pre-planning phase into the planning phase,” said Nicole Buchanan, Board Chair.

“This announcement is welcome news for Red Deer Public Schools as we continue to experience growth, particularly at the middle school level. Advancing the planning phase brings us closer to addressing capacity challenges and ensuring we can provide the best possible teaching and learning environments for our staff and students.”

The division is also grateful to the City, saying they have been collaborative partners in preparing the site for development.
